TV-B-Gone - Switch off annoying TVs!

  • £950

We interrupt this program to bring you.... TV-B-Gone kit allows you to take control of your local environment. It is a 'disruptive technology device' designed to switch off annoying and unnecessary televisions.

The TV-B-Gone was conceived by hack-hero Mitch Altman. It is designed emit the 'OFF' code for the majority of TVs in Europe and the US.

Basically it is kit to build a TV remote control which only has the power button. It is designed to turn off inappropriate TVs, such as unwatched ones in public spaces. It is a commercial product, but Mitch has also worked with Adafruit industries to have an open-source design.

This is the EUROPE version of the kit, so may not work in other regions.

Please note: This is a do it yourself kit. It comes as a kit of parts that you need to solder together, so you will need soldering iron and solder and basic tools.

Please note: While this has codes for a lot of TVs we cannot ensure all TV types will switch off. This unit uses infra red diodes and needs line of sight - it does not work through walls. This unit may not work on TVs that are controlled via a network (such as in commercial buildings).

Please note: I have had a couple of negative reviews about this kit (see below). This kit really does work on most major brands of TV! It does just send the 'off' codes via some high brightness IR LEDs, so needs to be thought of as a remote control. It may take up to 120 seconds to scroll through all the codes so please have patience when using it. Also double check with phone camera that you see the purple flashing from the LEDs (as highlighted in the instructions).

The kit instructions are available here.

Didn't work when assembled

Assembled correctly and used fresh batteries but wasn't able to make it function.

Sorry to hear this.
I would be interested to know more details about why it did not work. I have just built one of the kits from that batch and it works with my Bush TV.
It is worth noting (and for anyone reading the above negative review):
This works with about 60 major brands of TV but not all.
It takes up to 120 seconds to run through all the codes, so needs to be pointed at the TV for that length of time.
It uses Infra Red, so must have line of sight to the TV.
If the TV is in monitor mode (eg connected to a network) then the IR functionality may be switched off and this device will not work.

If you can, please check red light is flashing when button pressed. Check IR leds using a phone camera (do you see purple flashing light?). Double check all soldering.
I attempt to fault find for any of my kits - please email high quality, well lit and focussed photos of top and bottom of the board and explain problem and I will do my best to help.
Regards,
Matt
