Sol-a-tron - DIY solar charger

  • £2500

Build your own solar charger!

This unit has a USB output to recharge phones and other small USB devices.

There are two 1Wp solar panels which recharge a bank of three AA NiMH rechargable batteries.

A DC-DC converter ensures regulated 5V for the USB connector output.

Kit includes 2 x solar PV modules, laser-cut case and rechargable batteries.

In the UK the batteries will recharge in around one day during an average summers day. This depends upon the solar resource available.

Full instructions are available here.

The .dxf plans for the laser cut enclosure are available here.

This is a reasonably simple kit which requires some soldering and a few fiddly connections. It should take 1-2 hours to build. Not suitable for under 12 years old.
